Engraved with north to the bottom of the map, it shows Arabia (with Bahrain) on the right, India, Ceylon and the Maldives, with the edge of Sumatra top left. Published in Ramusio's 'Delle navigationi et viaggi', This is the engraved version, cut in 1563 after the original woodcut was destroyed in a fire at the printing house in 1557.

Originally engraved to be pasted onto a globe in 1688, this edition was printed with a text underneath it. It shows the Arabian Sea from Oman to Sri Lanka, with a roundel with a text describing how to sail from Goa to Madagascar and the Cape of Good Hope. Under the map and on verso is an Italian text.

Central Asia, including the Caspian, Kazakstan and Kyrgystan, with three vignette scenes of Tartar life. The area was the scene of the Great Game, a mixture of exploration, espionage and diplomacy, played between Russian and Britain, as the Russians attempted to push their empire south to British India. Marked on the map are the cities of Bukhara, Khiva, Merv and Tashkent, which had been unknown to outsiders less than fifty years before.

The Caspian Sea, with a vignette of local dress, a dedication to an Englishman, John Norris. and an inset of the port of Smyrna (Izmir), on the Aegean coast of Turkey. Probably published in a traveller's account.Despite being reached by Alexander the Great, the Caspian Sea was not mapped accurately until the Dane Carl Verden surveyed it fro the Russians in 1722.

Carte Marine de la Mer Caspiene levée Suivant les Ordres de S.M.Czariene... Amsterdam, Gerard & Leonard Valk, 1721. Original body colour. Two sheets conjoined, total 850 x 585mm. Narrow lower margin, as issued, a few old repaired tears.
Verden, a Russian sailor, created the first accurate map of the Caspian, despite the sea being visited by Alexander the Great two thousand years earlier. Guillaume de L'Isle re-drew the map for publication, of which this is a Dutch edition. Two two cartouches and eight insets make this a very striking map.

The Caspian Sea, but also showing east through Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, with the important Silk Road cities of Bokhara, Samarkand and Tashkent. The Caspian Sea had only just been mapped accurately: the Aral Sea is still featureless and filled with a note about what little was known.

An almost unrecognisable map of Sri Lanka: orientated with north to the left, the island has five almost flat sides. However Kandy, Colombo and Trincomalee are all marked. Three coloured cartouches, two compass roses, a figure with a spear mounted on an elephant and galleons around the coasts combine to make this a very decorative map. KOEMAN: Me 93b

A very large, detailed and decorative map of India made for the East India Company and divided into its regions with all towns shown. Military stations are marked and a chart on the right hand side of the map gives details about their locations as well as population details for Hindustan. A chart at the top right hand corner gives distances between all major cities and towns.

From the last woodcut edition of Ptolemy, using the blocks cut in 1522 for Laurent Fries. India, defined by the Indus in the west and Ganges in the east. The peninsula is severely underestimated, and the mythical island of 'Taprobana' appears off the western coast. The title (as above) is printed on verso, with a Latin text description.

Adam Ölschläger (latinised as Olearius) visited Persia between 1635 & 1639 as secretary to a mission from Holstein in Germany to open up a trade route for Persian silk via Russia and the Caspian Sea. His map was one of the first published in the west to show the Caspian as being longer than wider, something he himself has witnessed.
