Volume I was published in 1782; Vol. II 1809, having been delayed by a period of exile in Russia caused by the French Revolution; and Vol III, posthumously, in 1822. |

It was an attempt by the joint Anglo-Dutch forces under Admiral Rooke to capture a Spanish treasure fleet that had recently arrived in Vigo from Havana. Despite the heavy defences Rooke won a famous victory, although the bulk of the silver bullion escaped him. Rumours that the treasure sank in the bay was incorporated into the plot of Jules Verne's novel 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea'; Captain Nemo's crew earn money by salvaging amongst the wrecks. Published in Rapin & Tindall's 'History of England'. |
