Description
A map of the Holy Land before the conquest by the Children of Israel, orientated with north to the left, with text in Latin and some Hebrew. The cartography is quite distorted, with large bays on the Mediterranean coast, a tiny Cyprus tucking in the corner of the sea and the distance to the Tigris and the Persian Gulf foreshortened. For some reason 'Babel Turris' (the Tower of Babel) is named twice.
The map was first published in Christopher Plantin's 'Biblia Polyglotta', so called because the text was presented in five languages: Hebrew, Latin, Greek, Aramaic and Syriac. The publication was financed by Philip II of Spain, who sent orientalist Benedictus Arias Montanus (1527-98) to oversee the project..
