Description

A detailed map of the roads of Portugal, orientated with north to the left, published for the use of the British Army during the Peninsular War (1807-14), the Iberian theatre of the Napoleonic Wars. At the time of issue the Anglo-Portuguese army under Wellington faced a French army led by Marshal Masséna. The ownership inscription is probably that of General Robert Taylor (or Taylour, 1760-1839), an Irish soldier in the British Army, styled 'The Honourable' from birth. He became a lieutenant-general in 1808. He did not serve in the Peninsula but Wellington's campaign there would have been of huge interest to any serving offiver.
