Description
A large and decorative aquatint of the Roaring River in Jamaica, engraved by James (Jacques) Merigot (1760-1824) after Louis Belanger (1756-1816). 'Roaring River' depicts a sugar mill.
Belanger, a French landscape painter, worked throughout Europe, moving to London c.1790. He is not believed to have visited Jamaica himself, but used the work of British painter George Robertson (c.1748-88) as inspiration.
