Description

A woodcut prospect of Rome with a 22-point key of important buildings, including the Vatican and the Castel de San Angelo top right. It is printed within an ornate border printed from a separate block. On the reverse is a woodcut depiction of Romulus and Remus being suckled by the wolf, set in French letterpress. From Belleforest's 'La Cosmographie universelle de tout le monde', which was a French translation of Sebastian Munster's 'Cosmography', although taking the maps and prospects from other sources, including Ortelius and Braun & Hogenberg. As there was only one edition, Belleforest's maps are considerably rarer than Munster's.
