Description

An example of the first known state of this important map of Cypus, although there is already evidence of corrections (for example a shadow 'V' in Siricaum). It was engraved from the Bartolomeo-Pagno prototype by Paolo Forlani for Camocio, who published it as a separate-issue map. It was a very influential map, and was copied by Ortelius for his 1570 map of the island. In 'Cyprus: The Book of Maps', the authors list this as the first of five states, the last 1641-7; however 2,3 & 4 are all hypothetical, based on changes still visible on the last state.

Condition:

Trimmed just within plate and mounted in contemporary paper for inclusion in a composite atlas; as normally found in Lafreri type atlases,
