Description

A fine wall map of Africa, with two title cartouches, one French (as above), one Spanish. The borders, 170mm wide at the sides and 150mm at the bottom, contain twenty vignette scenes from African history and myth, all in full colour. These include the foundation of Carthage, the defeat of Hannibal by Scipio Africanus and conquests by the Greeks, Romans, Vandals and Turks. Each has a short text in French and Spanish. Considering the size of the map some restoration is inevitable. Surviving copies are rare.

Condition:

A good example.

References:

Neither Tooley or Norwich give Clouet's wall maps of the continents more than a passing mention. Tooley (p.37) dates the four 1788-93 (our Africa has the date 1785), and Norwich (p.104) follows his lead. It is likely that neither had seen this map.
