Description

One of the 24 gore sheets making up Coronelli's 42" (107cm) terrestrial globe. It shows the partial mapping of New Zealand by Abel Tasman in 1642 (nearly 130 years before Cook circumnavigated the islands) and not visited by Europeans since. Just to the north is 'Isola de S. Pedro', supposedly visited by Magellan in 1520. A decorative cartouche of coral contains an Italian-text decription of the Pacific Ocean, ''which derives its name from the tranquillity of its waves''. In the bottom left is an asterisk marking the exact antipode of Venice. The plate was published in Coronelli's 'Libro dei Globi' (Book of Globes), a volume that rarely appears on the market.
