Description

Coronelli's map of the Pacific is famous for its errors and ommissions. In the Americas California is an island and the south coast of Tierra del Fuego is shaded as unknown. In the northern reaches Hookaido is connected to the Asian mainland Jesso is conflated with Compagnies Land to create an island reaching half way to America. The pre-Cook outlines of Australia and New Zealand are shown, with a 'Coastline not yet known reaching from New Zealand almost to Cape Horn. In the top right, the title cartouche has two nereids holding a shell filled with seaweed, pearls and coral, while a third carries the Venetian arms.
