Description
A scarce map of Scandinavia, engraved in 1570 by Lucas & Jan van Doeticum from the six-sheet map by Liévin Algoet published by Gerard de Jode in 1562. After the publication was delayed by the monopoly privilege granted to Ortelius and his Theatrum, the map appeared in De Jode's 'Speculum Orbis Terrarum' in 1578, this example comes from the second edition, renamed 'Speculum Orbis Terrae' and published two years after his death by his widow and son. This was to be the last edition: after the death of Cornelis De Jode in 1600 the plates were bought by Vrients, then the owner of the Ortelius plates, merely to stop their re-issue.
Ortelius published no comparable map (Scandinavia is only part of his map of Northern Europe) so Ginsberg calls this 'the first modern regional map of Scandinavia'.
