Mexico, 1869-73. Folio, later cloth; letterpress title & half title; pp. 67+(4)+v (text in Spanish and French); chromolithographic title and 47 chromos on 44 plates, 2 tinted lithographs, with tissue guards, and two coloured lithographic folding maps. Extra illustrated with lithogrsaphic portraits of Teobaldo Ciconi (1824-63) & Ernesto Cavallini (1807-74).

Description

One of the most important plate books of Mexico City and its environs, enlarged from the first edition of 1855-6, with most of the plates upgraded to chromolithography from tinted lithographs. Many of the plates are after paintings by Mexican artist Casimiro Castro 1826-89. The large folding map of Mexico City is dated 1873 and the folding map of the Republic of Mexico is dated 1872. Of particular importance is a plate showing a group of Kickapoo Indians who were presented to Emperor Maximilian in 1865.

Some foxing and staining throughout.
