Description

An extremely rare edition of Doncker's chart of the Mediterranean in two sections, first published 1660. It has been updated with more ornate cartouches for title and scale, the latter depicting a ram with a star on its forehead, a pun on the publisher's name which works in English as well as Dutch. Johannes de Ram (1648-93), formerly a timber merchant, set himself up as a map publisher by buying old printing plates. This chart was published in association with Jacobus Robijn (1649-c.1710), although there is no mention of this partnership in Koeman's 'Atlantes Neerlandici'.

Condition:

Minor reinforcing at centre fold.
