Description

A large and detailed chart of Macquarie Harbour, as surveyed by George William Evans (1780-1852) in 1822 (not 1809 as in the title). Above the chart is a coastal profile of 'Hell's Gate', the narrow entrance to the harbour, with Cape Sorrell. Although the Hydrographical Office used this survey in their "Chart of Van Diemen's Land" (1826), they did not publish a separate plan of the harbour until 1845, making this the first separate chart of the area. The chart was engraved by Ambroise Tardieu and published as plate 44 of the account of Duperrey's circumnavigation, 'Voyage autour du Monde, executé par ordre du Roi, sur la Corvette de sa Majesté, la Coquille, pendant les années 1822, 1823, 1824 et 1825'.
