Description

A vey scarce broadsheet celebrating the victory that gave Britain's navy undisputed control of European waters during the Napoleonic Wars. The main panel is a map-view of the position of the fleets at the start of the battle, with a smaller plan of the attack and one showing the position of the battle compared the Spanish mainland. Underneath is letterpress text containing the dispatches written by Cuthbert Collingwood (1748-1810), Nelson's Vice Admiral at Trafalgar, lists of British, French & Spanish ships, and British casualties. Broadsheets such as these were the published to inform the general public about important events, sold in bookshops & stationers. Issued as loose sheets they were difficult to store, so surviving examples are rare.
