Description
A globe gore for a 49cm library globe, showing the Philippines, China north and east of Macao, Korea made an island by a small channel, western Japan and part of Tartary.
The gores were first published in 1632 in Rome, then by Domenico de Rossi in 1695. In 1738, when the firm closed after the death of Lorenzo de Rossi, Pope Clement XII bought nearly 10,000 printing plates of the de Rossi firm for the 'Calcografia della Reverenda Camera Apostolica di Roma'. The R.C.A. republished the globe as 'Il Globo Terracqueo corretto et accresciuto secondo le nuove scoperte l’anno 1744', with several updates, particularly in the Pacific, with parts of Australia added and California rejoining the mainland. On this plate the changes are minimal, with a river extending across Korea to make the peninsula an island.
This issue was the last. Despite the long history, all issues are now very rare.
