Edward Hitchcock (1793-1864), was Professor of Chemistry and Natural History at Amherst College from 1825 to 1845, then Professor of Natural Theology and Geology from 1845 until his death in 1864, also serving as Amhearst's third Prsident, 1845-54. Having been ordained as a Congregationalist pastor he attempted to reconcile modern discoveries with the Bible, while still rejecting evolution in favour of gap creationism.
