Description

A superbly-decorated map of Africa engraved by Jodocus Hondius jnr as one of a set of carte à figure continents first published in 1619. The seas are filled with galleons, flying fish, sea monsters and a vignette of Neptune cavorting with a mermaid. On land and the unknown gaps are filled with animals, including elephants, lions, leopards, camels, monkeys and ostriches. This example comes from its first issue in a full atlas, with the original decorative borders cut off so the map would fit. Henricus Hondius has replaced his brother's name with his own in the title.
