Description
Richard Norwood's map of Bermuda, engraved by Hondius from the Speed map of 1627. Henricus's older brother, Jodocus Hondius II, had already engraved a version of the map for the family firm, but had sold the copper plates of several maps to Willem Blaeu, who used them as the core of his new atlas, forcing Henricus to engrave another. A later state has Hondius's name removed and replaced with that of Johannes Jansson.
In Norwood's map a miniature version of the island had been inserted just under the title cartouche to show the position of the islands against the American mainland, seen across the top. This led later cartographers, including Moll, Le Rouge and Zatta (in 1778!) to include the miniature as an extra island.
