Description

An important map of the Guinea coast of Africa, from Cape Verde south to Cape Lopez in Gabon. Strapwork cartouches decorate the title, scale and inset of Sao Tomé. Of interest is 'Mina' (better known as Elmina), the Portuguese trading settlement infamous as a centre of the slave trade, before the Dutch seized it in 1637. Sao Tomé is highlighted because it was a major depot for the slaves from Elmina.
