Description

One of the earliest detailed maps of Japan, with decorative cartouches for the title and scale. Korea is depicted as an island, but with a note expressing doubt. There is no suggestion of Hokkaido. The map was first published in 1606, but this was the first time the Mercator atlas was published with an English text on the reverse, dedicated to Charles I. Translated by Henry Hexham, the title reads 'The Description of the Iland of Japan, and the Lesser Iles lying about it'. This latest edition was re-engraved, featuring a new title and a new galleon under Japan replacing the junk, although the accomapnying engraved text still describes it as a Japanese vessel.

Condition:

A good example.
