Description

The first derivative of John Smith's map of Virginia and Maryland, engraved by Dirk Grijp for Jodocus Hondius Jr in 1618, but sold by Hondius's widow to Willem Blaeu c.1630, much to the disgust of Henricus Hondius and Jan Jansson. Blaeu engraved his name over Hondius' in the scale used it until the fire of 1672 destroyed the Blaeu firm. Later printings appear in atlases by De Wit, Visscher and Covens & Mortier. Orientated with north to the right, the map centres on Chesapeake Bay. Top left is an inset of Powhatan's council and to the right a Sasquesahanough indian, both derived from drawing by John White.
