Description
A prospect of Rome from a hill in the south west, from an Illustrated London News Supplement. It shows the city under occupation by French soldiers, following the defeat of the defenders, led by Giuseppe Garibaldi. The Republic has forced the Pope to flee; French troops kept him in power until the Franco-Prussian War a decade later.
