Description

A decorative double-hemisphere map of the world, originally published by Jaillot in 1695 but here published nearly a century later with no discernible upating of the cartography. Thus its depiction of California as an island must make it one of the last atlas maps maps to show the myth. Elsewhere Hokkaido is shown as part of the Asian mainland, with 'Jesso' and 'Companies Land' conflated in the North Pacific, and Australia and New Zealand are incomplete, twenty years after Cook. The borders are illustrated with eight female allegorical figures including the Four Continents, animals and a volcano.

A very fine example.
