Description

A large and detailed English map of Portugal, unusual in having a Portuguese title and bilingual engraved notes, produced in conjunction with Miguel Rodriguez, printer to the Patriarchs of Lisbon. It is decorated with a large cartouche containing the title, dedication and scale, featuring female allegorical figures representing Britain, Portugal and Liberty, who holds a Phrygian cap. The map was first published in 1762, when Portugal was under pressure from Spain to end the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance, during the Seven Years' War. Within months of publication Britain sent an army to repel a Spanish invasion. According to Faden's note, this Second Edition has been 'completely rectified from the Maps lately published at Madrid by T. Lopez', as well as from the surveys of General Charles Rainsford (1728-1809), who had been chief engineer of the forced sent to Portugal in 1762. The map is still dedicated to John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute (1713-92), who was Prime Minister at the time of the original publication but was now long retired.
