Description

A rare print, comprising of nine views and two plans of the Norman St Paul's Cathedral, with a prospect of the City of London after Visscher, surrounding a poem by Edward Benlowes (1603-76) in English and Latin. In the dedication to Benlowes by Daniel King is a medallion portrait of the poet. The plate was originally published by King in 1658, before the Great Fire destroyed the cathedral. It was engraved by David Loggan (c.1634-92) famed for his views of the colleges of Oxford and Cambridge. This example has the imprint of John Overton (c.1639-1713) added, but still does not mention the Great Fire of 1666. For a later edition, published 1731 in 'London Described ', the poetry was removed and three elevations of Wren's new cathedral put in its place.
