Description

A rare chart of the north west coasty of Africa, orientated with north to the left. It shows from Lisbon, Seville and the Strait of Gibraltar, south to modern Liberia, with the Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands and Cape Verde Islands. The chart was was of the larger folding charts published in 't'Nieuwe en Vergroote Zee-Boeck, Dat is des piloots ofte Loots-mans Zee-Spiegel', a pilot book in a smaller fomat to the standard 'Zee-Spiegel'. The first edition of the book listed by Koeman is 1652, two years after Theunisz Jacobsz died; he suggests that it was in production in 1650 and was completed under his name. The second edition was 1653 and the last listed by Koeman 1654. Although the author's family name was Jacobsz, the business used 'Lootsman' (i.e. 'pilot'') to distance themselves from another printer.

Condition:

Small holes filled, narrow lateral margins, fine impression.
