Description
Miniature map of India and Sri Lanka from the five-volume work 'Description de l'Univers'.
Allain Manesson-Mallet (c.1630-1706) was a French military engineer and cartographer best known for two influential works: Description de l’Univers (1683), a widely circulated compendium of miniature maps, city views, and ethnographic engravings, and Les Travaux de Mars (1684), a major treatise on fortification and military engineering. His maps helped popularise geography and military science in late-17th-century Europe.
