Description
A miniature view of Chalkis, with a vignette Alexander the Great and Thais, the courtesan who persuaded him to burn Persepolis. Above is a Latin motto, 'Fortitudo cedit Veneri', with a line of Latin text and a four-line verse in German underneath. Neither the figures nor the texts appear to relate to Chalkis.
Meisner's book of town plans originally appeared in 1623 with only 52 plates. In 1624-6 it was re-issued with 416, and again in 1638-42 with a new title, 'Sciographia', and 800 plates, each plate with a letter before the pagination, as this example.
