Description

A miniature view of Chur, based on Merian. In the foreground are two soliders, one apparently running from a rabbit. Above the map is a Latin motto, 'Pulchrior Miles in Praelio Caesus, quam in Fuga Salvus', with two lines of Latin text and a four-line verse in German underneath. Neither the figures nor the texts appear to relate to Chur. Meisner's book of town plans originally appeared in 1623 with only 52 plates. In 1624-6 it was re-issued with 416, and again in 1638-42 with a new title, 'Sciographia', and 800 plates, each plate with a letter before the pagination, as this example.
