Description

A map of Bermuda from Ogilby's 'America', an English edition of Montanus' 'De Nieuwe En Onbekende Weereld', published the same year by Meurs. It is based on Richard Norwood's map as published by John Speed in 1627, but with a more decorative cartouche showing Neptune, mermaids and sea monsters. Over Virginia on the outline of mainland America at the top of the map are the seals of the two trading companies that owned Bermuda, the Virginia Company (1612-3) and the Bermuda Company (1613-84). Below the names of the plantation owners are listed.
