Description

A large and detailed map of Africa, copied from Jaillot's map of 1674, in turn based on Sanson's map of 1668. The interior of the continent is still largely fictitious, with the Ptolemaic lakes shown to be the source of the Niles. Of the west coast is 'S. Helena Nova', probably a misplaced and uncorrected Ascension Island. Despite the title this map was engraved and published in Amsterdam by Pierre Mortier. Mortier even put the name of Nicolas de Fer, a Parisian map publisher, on the title page of his atlas to improve sales.

Condition:

Slight toning at centre fold.
