Description

A large and colourful chart detailing the scant knowledge of the Pacific at the end of the 17th century, and highlighting several misconceptions. Top right is North America from the Gulf of the St Lawrence west to the Staits of Anian, with California as an island. Top left is Japan, with the partial outlines of Jeso and 'Compaignes Land'. Bottom left is the little that was mapped of northern Australia, with the Tasman's mapping of Tasmania and New Zealand to the distant south. This chart was added to the 'Suite de Neptune François' in 1700. Burden writes that he could not find the map in any later editions or later issues by other publishers.
