Description

A large and detailed folding map, published during the Peninsular War. As the title suggests Nantiat is most concerned with the borders between Spain and Portugal, especially the passes through which it was expected that Napoleon's army would come when the campaign season started in the spring. Faden obviously saw the market in selling such a map to the officers of Wellington's army in Portugal. In July 1810 Marshal Masséna led an army of 65,000 into Portugal, pushing towards Lisbon, but held back by the Lines of Torres Vedras, earthworks that had been built on the orders of Wellington, after which the war fell into stalemate until 1812.

Condition:

Case distressed, paper lightly toned, some wear to linen.
