Description
A large and detailed plan of London as it was during the Interregnum, the period between the execution of Charles I and the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, when Oliver Cromwell was Lord Protector. It shows the cities of London and Westminster less than ten years before the Great Fire of 1666.
It is decorated with views of Westminster Abbey and Old St Pauls, which is depicted with the classical portico and additions by Inigo Jones. Also shown are the arms of various city guilds; the genealogy of Brutus, the mythical founder of London; and a key with reference numbers to the city's churches.
The original was drawn by Richard Newcourt, engraved by William Faithorne and published 1658. The only complete example is in the Biblioteque Nationale; the British Library example lacks the title. This version was traced from an original example and engraved by George Jarman.
