Description
A fine example of the second plate of America prepared for Philippe Galle's version of the Ortelius 'Epitome du Theatre du Mond'. The second bulge in South America has been removed. In the Pacific is a little vignette of Magellan's ship 'Victoria'.
This second Ortelius-Galle plate is relatively uncommon, only appearing in five editions in as many years (1598-1603). Vrients purchased the plates for both this atlas and the competing Ortelius-Coignet version, preferring to publish the latter.
