Description

The second of two maps used for Germany in the 'Theatrum', also including the Low Countries, Switzerland and Austria. It is decorated with elaborate cartouches for the title and dedication, and the arms of the Holy Roman Empire. The map was compiled by Frans Hogenberg , who is more famous as the engraver of the maps of the first edition of the 'Theatrum' and the 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum', the first atlas of town plans. Although he engraved his map in 1576 it only appeared in the 'Theatrum' after Vrients took over the publication in 1602.
