Description

A map of England, Wales and the Isle of Man, copied from the map by Christopher Saxton in the first county atlas of England and Wales. It is decorated with intricate strapwork cartouches for the title, scale and attribution, the arms of Elizabeth I and a vignette seabattle. Vrients introduced this map into the 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum' shortly after he purchased the Ortelious plates, replacing a plate from 1573. However this Latin edition seems to be its only standard usage in an atlas: van den Broecke lists only four other editions in which it is used as a substitute for the expected map, and guesses that only 525 examples were printed.

Condition:

A fine example.
