A 16th century miniature map of Tartary

A miniature map of Tartary, showing north Asia west to the Black Sea, with the Strait of Anian separating Asia and America, with Japan just off the coast of California. This map was published in the 'Epitome', a pocket version of the Ortelius 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum'. This example is from the first plate used, engraved by Filip Galle, and comes from the only Italian edition with this plate.
