Description

Early printing of Piranesi's view of the exterior of the Pantheon in Rome, built by the emperor Hadrian c. AD 126 after Agrippa's original had burned down, but keeping Agrippa's original dedication. It shows the most intact Roman temple surrounded by people, including Grand Tourists clambering up the dome. Piranesi etched this plate in 1761: this example is from the first state, with the price of three Paoli, and lacking the plate number added after his death. One of the most famous and desirable of Piranesi's "vedute di Roma".
