Description

A 17th century map of Sicily and the environs, with insets illustrating two important events in ancient history: the Siege of Syracuse by the Athenian general Nicias in 311-309 BCE, during the Peloponnesian Wars; and the attack on Carthage by the Roman general Scipio in 204-201, during the 2nd Punic War. From Sir Walter Raleigh's 'The Historie of the World in Fives Bookes', written while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London, having been convicted of treason.
