Description
A large double-hemisphere map with a fully-coloured title cartouche in each cusp.
The map was first published in 1752, nearly twenty years before Cook's first circumnavigation (1769-70). This example has been updated to show his mapping of Australia and New Zealand, and marks his the route of his Second Voyage (1772-75), during which he attempted to find the 'Great Southern Continent, and his Third Voyage (1779-75), on which he passed through the Bering Strait and was killed on Hawaii. Despite acknowledging Cook, the mapping of the North Pacific has not been changed to include his discoveries. It still shows spurious channels that might be the North West Passage.
