Description
A chart of the world on Mercator's projection, with several interesting features. The continents form a continuous ring around the world, with America joined to Europe by Greenland Scandinavia, and North America above Florida and California melded with Tartary. 'Tierra del Fuego' is a large island south of the Magellan Straits and is the only attempt to show a Terra Australis'.
Engraved by Sanuto for Ruscelli's 'La Geographi di Claudio Tolomeo', first published 1561. This is an example of the second state, with the plate cut closer to the title.
