Description

Philip Lea's uncommon re-issue of the Saxton map of Essex, the first printed map of the county, engraved in 1576. When Lea first published his edition of Saxton's atlas c.1689 this map was not included, replaced by the Ogilby-Morgan map of 1676. Either the Saxton map was not available or needed too much updating. The additions here are considerable: the title is now in English rather than Latin; a plan of Colchester has been added, surrounded by eight armorials; Ogilby's roads are shown; and thew initials W R have been added by the Royal Arms, for William III.

Condition:

Narrow margins, extra margin added at top.
