Description

A fine sea chart of the western Indian Ocean, dedicated to the East India Company. Orientated with north to the left, it shows from the Cape of Good Hope to Cape Comorin in India, with the coasts of both the Red Sea and Persian Gulf surrounded by names. The title is within an ornate cartouche surmounted with the original arms of the East India Company, replaced in 1709. Originally published by Seller in 1671, this example was issued during the short-lived consortium of the four publishers, 1677-8, brought about by Seller's financial difficulties. At the time the Portuguese still had footholds on the eastern African including at Mombasa; before the end of the century the Omani Empire had driven them out.
