Description

A fine engraving showing a Portuguese carrack in the Indian Ocean using the clanging of bells to keep an impressive array of sea monsters away. The plate was engraved by Philips Galle for ''Venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium. Pugnae Bestiariorum'' (Hunting of wild animals, birds, and fish. Battles of the Beasts), after illustrations by Jan van der Straet (1523-1605, name Latinised as Johannes Stradanus).

Condition:

Trimmed to image on three sides, into plate at bottom.
