Description
A highly decorative map of London, the map shows from Hyde Park Corner, clockwide to Sadler's Wells, Mile End Road & Lambeth. Three large cartouches contain the title, the City Arms, and a dedication to George Thorold, the Lord Mayor. Some of the important buildings are shown in perspective, including Wren's St Paul's Cathedral, although that building is shown as an artist's impression, as it had not been completed.
The map was published in John's Strype's 'A Survey of the Cities of London and Westminster', a continuation of 'Stow's Survey'. It accompanied a series of parish maps engraved by Richard Blome in 1695 for a failed publication and previously unpublished. The style of the engraving suggests this map is also the work of Blome.
