Description
A detailed map of western Africa from Senegal to Nigeria, within an ornate printed border and vignettes of Sierra Leone, Christiansborg (Osu Castle), Cape Coast Castle and Bakel in Senegal. The map extends inland to Timbuktu in Mali and Kano in northern Nigeria, and marks routes of caravans across the Sahara. James Renell's infamous 'Mountains of Kong' are marked, as is a supposed course of the Niger River.
The map was drawn and engraved by John Rapkin for the 'The Illustrated Atlas, and Modern History of the World, Geographical Political, Commercial & Statistical', edited by Montgomery Martin, which was one of the last decorative atlases to be published.
