Description

A miniature map of London, engraved by Valegio after the Braun & Hogenberg plan of 1572. It shows the medieval city walls (surrounding what is 'Square Mile' of Modern London, The Tower of London, London Bridge, The Strand following the bend in the Thames, and the Palace of Westminster. It was originally published in 1598 in Valegio's pocket atlas of town plans, 'Raccolta di le piu illustri et famose citta di tutto il mondo', but his example comes from the 'Universus terrarum orbis', a geographical lexicon by Raphael Savonarola (also known as Alphonso Lasor a Varea).
