Description

A circular medieval map of the World ( portolano )orientated with north to the left, with Jerusalem at the centre. as drawn by Pietro Vesconte (fl. 1310-30) for Marino Sanudo's 'Liber Secretorum Fidelibus de Crucis' (c.1320), a manuscript work presented to Pope Clement V to encourage a new crusade. Vesconte's maps were highly influential: it was the source for the 'modern' maps of the Holy Land in editions of Ptolemy's 'Geographia'. However this engraving was the first time that his world map was published.

Condition:

Trimmed to plate at top by binder, due to the size of the map.
